ating disorders are just not a phase or fad, these are real, life threatening medical Illnesses. Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. These disorders co-exist along with psychological disorders, mostly depression. These occur in the form of distorted body image of oneself and excessive bullying or childhood trauma of the individual. Eating disorders lead to an array of physical effects both minor and major like brittle hair and nails, extreme thinness and dry skin. Long term physical effects of eating disorders include heart problems as when body does not get enough calories it breaks down own muscles and tissues for fuel, malnutrition resulting from restriction in diet and purging out of vitamins from the body, slow digestion occurring due to food restriction and vomiting, temperature drop resulting from less energy to fuel its metabolism, deterioration of esophagus and teeth due to acidity caused from excessive vomiting

Eating disorders is a complex condition affecting more than 20 million women and 10 million men across the United States. Self-harm, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and social isolation are coupled with eating disorders as psychological disorders. Unhealthy eating habits lead to maladaptive eating patterns that gets difficult to control and require psychotherapy, nutritional counselling and specific evidence-based treatments. Recovery is possible for people battling through eating disorders, through positive reinforcement into the lives of individuals, establishing a positive self-image in front of the individual. All of these can be overcome through professional help. Common health consequences of eating disorders are blood pressure and pulse drop, depletion of laxatives from body, bacterial infections, severe constipation, stomach rupture due to binge eating, intestinal obstruction, dizziness, reduced resting metabolic rate, anaemia and kidney failure among few.

Eating disorders start from adolescence as the individual develops a body image and gets body shamed from peers. Skipping of meals is another reason leading to eating disorders as teenagers tend to eat junk food to fill their stomachs, be satisfied and feel satiated. .
